ÅFRÖSWÈDÉ – A Visual Celebration of Both

Lola Akinmade Åkerström, Sweden

Integration and assimilation are two different beasts. This photography project aims to visualize and celebrate what integration feels like, when we can seamlessly blend all facets of our identities without having to choose one or the other. As opposed to assimilation which requires you choose one over the other.

The blue/yellow backgrounds and yellow facial accents symbolize the Swedish flag and newest identity,
while a blending of both African and Swedish-inspired attire plus accessories symbolize integration.

The creative idea was developed by Hasselblad Heroine and award-winning photographer Lolá Ákínmádé Åkerström. Lola then partnered with wardrobe stylist and costume designer Sarah Ismail to bring the visual combinations to life. For our pilot shoot, we also partnered with students from Black woman-owned Swedish makeup brand FÄRG Makeup and its academy.

Our goal is to photograph hundreds and potentially thousands of residents proudly celebrating all parts of their identities including being Swedish.
