BLOSSOMED FROM ASHES

Mauro De Bettio, Italy

Flowers have the extraordinary ability to give satisfaction by seeing their unique beauty.
Just like the flowers, so are the scars of Wycliffe’s past.

Wycliffe was born and raised in the Kibera slum, Nairobi, Kenya. He was left alone with his sisters that evening when the house caught fire on his second birthday. While his sisters desperately ran for their safety, Wycliffe was left behind, sleeping on the bed of his home on fire.
By the time help came, he had already secured 3rd and 4th-degree burns on almost 70% of his body. However, luck was on his side. They rushed to the hospital immediately but treating Wycliffe’s burns took one and a half years. Though he had to go back several times for different body surgeries and operations, he thanks God that he now considers himself entirely healed.
Wycliffe believes the fire gave him the gift of the most beautiful scars he has ever seen.
His new skin houses his tragic past and the real Wycliffe, the true self that no one else can ever be.
He gets to be here and be him, so he wants to be everything in his dreams.”
