Growing in Absence

Nuria López Torres, Spain

The great Cuban exodus that has been taking place in recent years leaves behind a large number of children who stay with grandparents and relatives, waiting for their parents to reclaim them once they manage to regularize their situation in their country of origin, a situation that can be delayed for many years and can take time. The crossings, both by land and by sea, are often very dangerous and the parents decide to leave them in Cuba with a relative. These children are some of the different victims of this massive exodus that is shaking the island.

The phenomenon does not only affect the children, but also those grandparents or relatives who must assume the responsibility of raising these children whose material and emotional needs must be covered. These grandparents and relatives make a great effort so that the children are as well as possible, and feel as little as possible the absence of their parents.

This story is about three girls with different realities and different histories.
