In Peacetime
I’ve always loved photographing people in their environment. Capturing their joy, their pain, their memories – in short, their daily lives. It moves me to see women and men confide in me without even knowing me.
I love the feeling of taking the time to listen to people and build up a relationship of trust. It’s even more intense when I listen to my compatriots share their suffering with me. And unfortunately there are many of them: people displaced by war, victims of the Nyiragongo volcanic eruption, landslides, fires, etc. In fact,
I am constantly struck by the depth of their misfortune on the one hand, and on the other their quest for a better life, their faith in their hopes. Beyond their suffering, these people have not abandoned their dreams, which they hope will one day come true.
In Peacetime is a personal project that aims to show what hope means in the lives of people displaced by war. The hope that these people will be able to carry out their projects, set up local initiatives or see their children go to school. It’s true that I don’t have the power to make their projects a reality, but I could allow them to see themselves in their dreams and immortalise them through this reportage.
