And so, we are free!
My two sisters and I were faced with the trauma of seeing our father beat our mother. Seeing our mother sad made us unhappy. The situation made us lack many things our friends and cousins had. Sometimes we did not go to school nor eat. We became very afraid of our father. We wanted freedom. Freedom to be happy to do everything other children do. One day our father told our mother that he was leaving us and her. We were glad he left, because now we are very happy; free from the trauma my father made us experience. So, with the camera I got from my grandmother and with my mother’s phone camera, feeling free, I love to take my sisters' snapshots everywhere we go. To me, this is what peace means...FREEDOM FROM UNHAPPINESS

Ansichten des Friedens / Views of peace
My name is Jimmy and I am 12 years old. I used a Canon 450d to take my pictures and I have not edited them. Peace means something different for each being on our planet. Peace for me means living in freedom, feeling love for humans, animals and nature, experiencing joy of life and no war, being happy together with others and tolerant towards them, respecting my environment and my fellow human beings, enjoying the moment and even little things. Also: usable land and water for all beings would bring much peace for the world. I photographed the picture Hoping for Peace from the war-and-love diary of my great-grandfather to my great-grandmother.

Balance
Peace - it’s like a wheel, when you push it forward the wheel starts to spin. Smooth and calm, the movement of the wheel is like a green light in our world. The wheel continues until it meets with something that will make it hard to spin. When this happens, eventually the wheel will stop. It’s something hiding in the dark shades. We don’t know what and when it will happen. When everything goes the way it’s supposed to be, the wheel stays on the bright side. When something gets out of control, the wheel crosses the line between peace and war. The hopes and believes are for the wheel to stay on the light side, to make peace happen. Make the right choices and keep the wheel on the bright side.

Country air
I am 7 years old and live in the big city of Rome. My grandparents live in the countryside in Germany. Unfortunately I can visit them only twice a year. But every time my family is visiting them, we enjoy the country air a lot. This summer my one-year-old brother explored the garden and nature and enjoyed it so much! (Single photo selected by jury)

Freunde sind für einen da / Friends are there for each other
Alfred Fried Photography Award 2017 – Children Peace Image of the Year 2017
Lina Momsen – photo group LIRALE, Germany
Freunde sind für einen da / Friends are there for each other If somebody is only a shadow of his former self it usually is a bad sign. However, the Lina Momsen and her friends’ play with shadows is supposed to express something totally different. They wrote that they were looking for ‘peaceful forms’ for what connects them. For forms through which they can express that peace means for them not to have to scramble through life on one’s own, but to have friends. Hand in hand and in a heartfelt way. Carefree and happy, in harmony or a bit crazy. Lina Momsen from Hamburg and her friends who call themselves ‘LIRALE group’ were chosen out of the 1,900 contributions from 137 countries and 28 finalists to be awarded the Children Peace Image of the Year which is awarded for the first time this year in cooperation with the German Youth Photography Award as part of the Alfred Fried Photography Award. Peace-making friendships are the central theme of a large number of the photographs sent in by the boys and girls under the age of 14.

Frieden-Peace
We made a photo session about happiness and peace in our little city near lake Ammersee. Young people – like we are – would like to show their feelings and are interested in different things – they find them everywhere. We love nature, our city, weird old things, ice-cream, friends, fashion, freedom and peace!

Im Namen der Rose / In the name of the rose
Alpen-Adria-Gymnasium Völkermarkt, 11 Jahre / Holy spring, turn to me. Give me the insight I need to heal in light and to grow. Healing power of light, teach me to receive you and to see and experience your work. I have the courage, I fight against the fear, to feel the light and become aware of it. The light helps you to get through difficult periods. The true light takes you into the reality and truth of your being. In the name of the rose. I am grateful to experience this.

Rocks as a symbol of peace
In this photo series I photographed rocks in different positions and with different backgrounds. My idea was that a rock is the symbol for peace and for the power to outlast everything - even war. My pictures are very simple - just stones and nature - but they should express that anyone can create peace! No matter what age or social class, whether poor or rich. Yet I have not described the photos in more detail, because I want everyone to interpret them by themselves. So please try, because every interpretation is right!
